Up until National Poetry Day (6th October 2016), Matilda was Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire’s Young Poet Laureate. Matilda was appointed a year previously to this annual tenure role and at fourteen was then the youngest ever.
Throughout her year she has been involved in promoting poetry in all its forms across the county including running workshops and a county wide youth poetry competition, from which the finalists have had their work displayed on the No.18 bus of the First Potteries network.
Matilda feels that poetry is incredibly important for all the little everyday moments in life, as well as the big things. Her aim is to continue to show people how important and unpretentious poetry really is as well as to get it into day to day life to be enjoyed and be engaged with.
Matilda’s talk will include her story of getting poetry on the buses as well as why she is passionate that this often misunderstood form of communication still has an important part to play in our futures.
